1993 and the early sounds of dnb were starting to take shape. Production standards were changing, and rave sounds were taking a different direction.

Rave music started morphing and changing into a fresh new vibe. Jungle, techno, jungle techno, hardcore, whatever you called it, we kept pushing forward, blending all the ideas and inspirations together, to make something new.

If 1992 was the blueprint, 1993 built the foundations for drum and bass.

This is my selection of the tracks I played and remember well from this time.

We go back to 1993 to revisit the tracks that were big in that year and that I enjoyed playing at the time. 1993 was a pivotal year for drum and bass and jungle. This mix includes artists such as Smith Inc, Omni Trio, Boogie Times Tribe, Studio Pressure and many more. It also features my track `Gangsta`, taken from ‘The Protege EP’ on Reinforced Records. Reinforced was one of my absolute favourite labels back then, I used to play so many different tracks from different artists on that label, and I was really happy to have a release on there. 🙏👊

I was playing some memorable gigs around that time, too, ‘Dance Paradise’ at Tiffany’s in Great Yarmouth and ‘The Edge’ (Formally ‘The Eclipse’) in Coventry, come to mind. There was such a good feeling around in 1993, so many good parties around the country, and with all the great new music that was being made, the raves and new club nights were kicking off everywhere. I remember 1993 very fondly it was a historic period for the music, and this mix is my tribute to those times. 🔥❤️

We’ve had a lot of messages asking for the full 3 hours from my DJ set at @metalheadzmusic Blue Note Sessions at @phonoxlondon in March earlier this year. The full 3 hour reconstructed set from the night is now available ☝️☝️. I really enjoyed the gig, and it was great to play and hear all those tunes again from back in the day, so many great memories!

Looking back now, almost 30 years since I was playing at the original Blue Note in Hoxton Square, it makes you realise that it was great to be involved with such an iconic night in music history. To this day, all the memories I have from that time are still so vivid, like it was only last year. Nights like that come along once every generation, a handful of artists created a completely new and fresh sound that was loved by everyone that attended.

Truly amazing memories that I will hold dear to me forever, a beautiful time when everyone came together for the love of the music and the birth of a sound that would go on to become truly legendary.

I remember DJing at the time at venues such as Roller Express, Tasco Warehouse, and The Lazerdrome in London and events such as Rezerection in Newcastle, amongst others. It was such an exciting time going to different events and playing all this incredible new music. It was amazing.

The impact that this music had on the country was incredible, and it grew so quickly!!

I really enjoyed looking back at those times with this new mix, "The History Of Drum and Bass," and will continue with the following years over the next months with my mix series for Apple music.
